Hobcaw Barony

Hobcaw Barony is a 16,000-acre research reserve that was once the winter retreat of Wall Street financier Bernard Baruch. The property is a massive “living laboratory” containing every common South Carolina coastal ecosystem alongside over 70 cultural sites, including Friendfield Village, one of the region’s last intact slave villages.

Visitors can explore the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center for free to see museum exhibits and a salt marsh aquarium, but access beyond the gates requires a guided tour.
