Dear Litchfield-By-The-Sea Owners,
Welcome to Sea Turtle Hatching Season! It is an incredibly exciting time along our one-mile stretch of Litchfield By the Sea shoreline. After weeks of careful monitoring, we are officially transitioning into the hatching phase (late July to October) of the Sea Turtle Nesting Season!
Over the next few weeks, thousands of tiny loggerhead hatchlings will emerge from their sandy nests and make their crucial journey to the ocean.
These resilient creatures are a vital part of our coastal ecosystem. Because hatchlings face massive natural odds, our community plays a critical role in their survival. Here is how you can help protect this valuable resource and ensure our tiny neighbors make it safely to the Atlantic.
Hatchlings emerge at night and naturally crawl toward the brightest horizon, which should be the starlit ocean. Artificial lights easily disorient them, causing them to crawl inland toward buildings and roads where they can perish.
- Turn Off Beachfront Lights: Turn off all outdoor balcony and deck lights from Dusk until Dawn.
- Close Your Blinds: Draw interior curtains, drapes, or blinds after dark to block indoor light.
- Use Turtle-Safe Flashlights: If you walk along the beach at night, use red LED flashlights. Red light does not disrupt the turtles’ navigation. Never use standard white flashlights or cell phone lights.
A tiny hatchling faces a monumental journey over the sand. Small obstacles to us are giant roadblocks to them.
- Flatten Sandcastles: Fill in all holes and knock down sandcastles before you leave the beach for the day. Female turtles can get stuck in holes while nesting, and hatchlings can fall into them and become trapped.
- Leave No Trace: Remove all beach chairs, umbrellas, tents, and toys every afternoon.
Marine turtles frequently mistake plastic debris for food, which can be fatal.
- Pack It Out: Dispose of all trash, food wrappers, and plastic bags in designated recycling and garbage receptacles.
- Pick Up Stray Litter: If you see plastic or trash blowing across the dunes, please pick it up and discard it properly.
Our local turtle patrol volunteers work tirelessly to locate and mark nests with protective tape and stakes.
- Give Them Space: Keep a respectful distance from marked nests and never disturb the protective materials.
- Hands Off: If you are lucky enough to witness a nest hatching, do not touch, hold, or shine lights on the hatchlings. Let them crawl to the ocean naturally, as this crawl imprints the beach location on them for future nesting.

Maintenance News & Project Updates:
Each day, your LBTS Management Team coordinates and performs many small & large repairs across both campuses. However, when larger projects may impact owners/guests, we will provide details regarding those projects so you can plan accordingly. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to maintain and improve your community.
Litchfield-By-The-Sea
- Upcoming Boardwalk Project
Maintenance is currently working on the boardwalk as part of the ongoing efforts to preserve and improve the structure for long-term safety and durability. To minimize disruption, the boardwalk will always remain open during the project. Work will be completed in 16-foot sections to allow continued pedestrian access while repairs are underway.
- Osprey Watch Lake Update
Fountain C has successfully passed inspection and is currently awaiting the installation of the electrical meter. Once the meter has been installed and activated, the fountain will be placed into service. On Fountain A the Zinc’s have been replaced.
- Community Sign Maintenance Update
Our Maintenance Team has completed the installation of several new traffic and safety signs through Charlestown Grant. Improvements include eight new stop signs and a new “no trespassing sign” to help hance safety and improve traffic flow. As well as installing eighteen new crosswalk signs around Litchfield by The Sea.
- Tennis & Pickleball Court Update
We are aware that one of the lights serving the tennis and pickleball courts was out during the evening hours. Our Maintenance Team has identified the issue, and this has been repaired.
Please note: Our Maintenance Team routinely removes trash and debris from the beach to help keep our shoreline clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. We kindly remind all residents and guests, whether visiting the Beach Club or any area of the beach, to please use the trash cans when disposing of waste. Your cooperation helps protect our beautiful coastline, preserves local wildlife, and keeps Litchfield by The Sea clean for everyone to enjoy.
River Club
- Community Sign Maintenance Update
Our Maintenance Team has resumed work on community signage and is currently refurbishing the Fairway Lane sign. The sign has been temporarily removed so necessary repairs and maintenance can be completed to improve its appearance and durability before it is reinstalled.
- Irrigation Repair Completed
Our maintenance Team has successfully repaired two irrigation lines at the Main Gate and River Club entrance.
- Main Gate Fountain
Our Maintenance Team is actively pumping water into fountain one at the Main Gate to help maintain appropriate water levels.
Landscaping News and Updates
The following landscape maintenance update is provided by our Landscape Maintenance Partner, United Land Services, to ensure we meet the needs of the community and address any issues caused by weather, pests/bugs, accidents, etc.
LBTS Common Area Landscape Maintenance
Turf Grass Mowing and Ponds
- Completed all mowing and weed eating on both campuses this week.
- Mowing will continue daily on both properties (LBTS & River Club).
- Mowing and weed eating will continue weekly in Compass
Ornamental Detailing
- Detailing around Beach Club
- We continued trimming the shrubs at the entrance near the guard house.
- We trimmed the shrubs around the Beach Club house this week.
- We went through the beds and removed all the volunteer growth.
- We deadheaded the flowers throughout the community.
- We replaced the flowers that died at the front of Compass Point.
Fertilization, Weed Control & Pest Services
- Weeds were sprayed throughout the entire property in LBTS.
- Weeds were sprayed throughout entire property in River Club.
- We sprayed all the weeds around the Beach Club.
Irrigation Inspections & Maintenance
- System will be routinely inspected for operational efficiency and condition.
- Visual inspection will include controller and electronic components, spray and rotor heads and shrub risers.
- Minor adjustments for efficiency will be made during inspection.
- Repairs for malfunctioning, broken or worn-out components (heads, line breaks, controllers and electronics, pumps, etc.) will be done after client approval.
- We replaced a bad valve and solenoid that failed in Compass Point.
