Pawleys Island Historic District

The Pawleys Island Historic District serves as one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast, established by 18th-century rice planters escaping the inland heat. This “arrogantly shabby” district features twelve surviving residences dating from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s, characterized by wide porches and high foundations.

Visitors can best experience this area through a self-guided walk or drive to view historical markers on homes like the Pelican Inn, which was built in 1858.
